Canberra Strings, an ensemble of some of capital's leading professional string players, present a concert of chamber music featuring Schoenberg’s monumental work, Transfigured Night, in its original string sextet format. Written at the close of the nineteenth century, Transfigured Night is Schoenberg’s tribute to German late-Romanticism, with lush melodies and chromatic harmonic sequences showing the influences of both Brahms and Wagner.
The second work on the program is Richard Strauss’ Metamorphosen in his original version for string septet. Written in 1945, in this powerful work Strauss expressed his despair over the effects of World War II on Europe and particularly his native Germany.
