Mary Barron will be an Artist in Residence in her exhibition space, 'Lace'.
She will demonstrate Bobbin Lace making and chat to people who visit her. Bobbin Lace making is certainly an ‘old school’ technique, emerging out of Venice in the 16th Century. As an easy to learn craft, requiring inexpensive tools, Bobbin Lace making quickly rose in popularity throughout Europe. The first bobbins would have been made from chicken or rabbit bones. This evolved into wooden bobbins and eventually novelty bobbins made from metal or glass adorned with beads were created.
Held in conjunction with Mary’s exhibition Lace, on view in the Hugo Du Rietz Gallery 19 February–14 March 2020.
