Join curator Rose Barrowcliffe for a Walk + Talk through Reading Between the Lines: Uncovering Butchulla History in the K’Gari Research Archive.

Reading Between the Lines uncovers the hidden stories of the Butchulla people, the traditional custodians of K’gari (Fraser Island), through a creative examination of the K’gari Research Archive.

Archives of local and national significance across Australia have been founded on colonial systems of record keeping, with institutions valuing written records that uphold the settler-nation narrative. This has resulted in a disproportionate representation of non-Indigenous perspectives in archives, such as the K’gari Research Archive.

Curator Rose Barrowcliffe brings light to the history of Butchulla people and their country that has previously been concealed through the dominant settler-colonial narrative of this archive to reveal a decolonised perspective of people and place.
