Kirkman and Scott - Pirates of Penzance

The Sunshine Coast is delighted to present the 2024 Kirkman & Scott production of The Pirates of Penzance. We have selected some of the most highly trained and accomplished music and theatre professionals from across Queensland for the principal roles. The chorus is also comprised of a number of professional singers and the finest local talent. There has never been a musical theatre production on the Sunshine Coast with a cast of this calibre.

Pretending to be a pirate or in the company of pirates is a fantasy of many. Set sail with this swashbuckling troupe in a classic comedy that boasts the most famous of patter songs in musical theatre. Gather together a group of tender-hearted pirates, a motley crew of policemen and a bevy of beauties, under the brash but endearing Pirate King who challenges a delightfully stuffy Major General Stanley, and you have the musical comedy “Pirates of Penzance”.

Combine the music and lyrics of Gilbert and Sullivan, with this comedy of errors, and you have the “Pirates of Penzance”. A young man, Frederick, is mistakenly apprenticed to the band of pirates until his 21st birthday. As he approaches the end of his indentures, his eyes fall upon the charming and delightful Mabel. Vowing to exterminate the pirate crew, Frederick is torn between his developing love for Mabel and his commitment to his “Duty”.

Even in these modern times, the delight of a musical comedy, can melt the hardest of hearts and soothe the souls of savage beasts.
