Sydney Independent Opera

Sydney Independent Opera is a chamber opera company in Sydney, Australia presenting small-scale operas in english with chamber orchestra.

Founded in 2011, Sydney Independent Opera, under the direction of Artistic Director Steven Stanke, will present vibrant and innovative performances of chamber operas and operas in chamber settings from composers such as Mozart and Rossini to Britten, Holst, Menotti and others. The company aims to be one of Sydney's leading small opera groups, known for high-quality performances and imaginative programming, and featuring some of Sydney's finest operatic artists.

Sydney Independent Opera will play a vital role in Sydney's operatic landscape by programming lesser-known works by established composers or new works by emerging composers, with sympathetic casting, creative production values and enthusiastic artistic passion. The performance of all works in english will provide an alternative perspective for opera enthusiasts where the original work is in another language and also offer an entertaining and informative experience for the operatic first-timer. The company will use an orchestra of around 10-12 players, with specially reduced orchestrations if needed, allowing the setting to be intimate and dramatic without losing the original orchestral colour.
