Be our Valentine. You are always in our hearts, in our past, our present and hopefully our future. You are there for us in the day and the night, under the sun, rain and stars. Some of our happiest times in our lives have been with you, but so have some of our saddest because lately it feels like we only go backwards. So this Valentine’s Day, our gift to you is SLAM Day 2013, because we want to celebrate you, and show that with you it is a beautiful world, we need you tonight and tomorrow because you are one seriously sophisticated lover, we love you hourly, daily, there's no aphrodisiac like you and that ain’t bad.
SLAM stands for Save Live Australia’s Music, and is an independent organisation working to preserve and promote live music, as well as work on changing policies that affect music venues, musicians and ultimately the punters.
SLAM Day 2013 will see hundreds of small venues across Australia host gigs in a nationwide celebration of live Australian music. This year it is taking place on Saturday 23 February.
SLAM Day 2013 marks the third anniversary of Australia’s largest ever cultural protest - the 2010 SLAM Rally in Melbourne - that saw 20,000 people take to the streets to protest and raise awareness about Victorian Liquor Licensing policies that linked live music to high risk activity. This resulted in the abolition of legislation connecting live music and violence, helping protect the vulnerable live music scene in Australia just a little bit more.
In 2012, the first SLAM Day took place across cafes, backyards, bars, pubs and other venues in Australia to raise awareness of the threats to artistic expression due to regulatory barriers. Without the vivacious existence of the live music scene in Australia, you would never have been able to learn how to self-love or enjoy the best of Austin Powers, hit a political nerve, or enjoy this entire album.
