Danish royal couple announced as Sydney Opera House patrons

Crown Princess Mary and her husband Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark will make a royal visit to Sydney this October as Patrons of the Opera House for its 40th Anniversary program.

The Opera House was designed and largely built by Danish architect Jørn Utzon in 1973, so it is only fitting that Denmark’s royal couple have been selected to help celebrate.

The news was announced today by SW Deputy Premier and Minister for Trade and Investment, Andrew Stoner who said, “It is exciting to be celebrating the 40th Anniversary of one of the greatest buildings of the twentieth century in the presence of Denmark's Crown Prince Couple.”

The Opera House’s actual birthday is on Sunday October 20 when the Concert Hall and Joan Sutherland Theatre will be open to visitors.

This year celebrations will continue through to October 28 with some major events already confirmed including a commemorative re-creation of the Opera House’s opening concert on October 27 with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9. Miguel Harth-Bedoya will conduct the performance and it will feature soloists from Opera Australia with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.

A special exhibition devoted to Danish design’s contemporary legacy titled, Danish Rooms at the Opera House will also be held from 25 October to 11 November.

Kim Williams AM, Sydney Opera House Chairman said, “The $13.7 million recently announced by the NSW Government for 2014/15 will fund a master-planning process that will define and scope the projects needed to preserve and enhance the Opera House for future generations of artists, audiences and visitors as a vital State, National and World Heritage asset.”
