Situated in the heart of Victoria’s bushranger country, Benalla Art Gallery occupies a striking modernist building by the lake.

The Gallery presents an exhibition program of Australian and international art in the Bennett Gallery, in addition to the permanent collection which includes elements of the region’s history and recounting an Australian-European settlement story. The collection continues to develop with recent acquisitions including outstanding Indigenous and contemporary Australian artworks.

The Ledger collection comprises Australian art from the 19th and early 20th centuries with an emphasis on the Australian colonial and impressionist periods. The collection is divided into two parts: the Ledger collection of 19th and 20th century art and the modern and contemporary art collection in a variety of media.

The Benalla Art Gallery collection includes painting, printmaking, works on paper, photography, textiles, ceramics, sculpture and decorative arts. On permanent display is a tapestry of Sidney Nolan’s Glenrowan from his Ned Kelly series and Impression for Golden Summer by Arthur Streeton.

Following the 2002 bushfires artist Rick Amor was commissioned to create a work which responded to the blackened landscape. The result, The Arc - aftermath of bushfires in the North East is a record of the tragedy of the fires, and an affirmation of nature’s powers of regeneration.
