After months of intrigue, hype and anticipation, Madame Tussauds has finally opened its doors in Darling Harbour, Sydney.

It has taken a staggering 56,000 hours of work and over 1,750kg of Japanese and bee’s wax (the equivalent to 10,294 tea light candles) to create the collection of over 70 figures on display at Madame Tussauds Sydney - the latest addition to Merlin Entertainments Group’s Sydney attractions.

For the very first time, Sydneysiders can get up close and personal with some of Australia’s most loved and admired personalities including Lleyton Hewitt, Jimmy Barnes and Cate Blanchett, to name just a few. These iconic Aussie’s will be accompanied by some of the most influential, powerful, talented personalities (both past and present) in the world, including Queen Elizabeth II, Nelson Mandela, Rihanna, and Johnny Depp.

The new, permanent attraction is the first of its kind to land on Australian shores and has nine themed zones accommodating the wax figures for visitors to interact with. Whether it’s surfing next to Layne Beachley, kissing Leonardo DiCaprio, dancing with Michael Jackson or having a chat on the sofa next to Oprah, visitors will be starstruck.

Each wax figure represents a significant moment in time and often the personality will donate clothes or props to be worn by the figure. Jimmy Barnes donated his leather trousers as worn at his Cold Chisel V8 Supercars performance at the ANZ Stadium in 2009, and he also asked Maton Guitars to make a replica guitar.

Madame Tussauds General Manager, Hywel Mathais commented, “Madame Tussauds is synonymous with history, heritage and fine artistry and we’re so excited that we can finally welcome such an iconic attraction to Sydney.

"We can’t wait to welcome Sydneysiders and tourists alike to step inside of the glamourous world of Madame Tussauds. Given there’s no other attraction like it in Australia, I can’t wait to see the reactions on people’s faces when they get up close and personal to their favourite stars.”

It takes 800 hours and 60 of Madame Tussauds’ most talented sculptors and artists to handcraft just one wax figure. Using techniques perfected over the 250 year tradition of Madame Tussauds, quite literally hundreds of measurements are meticulously taken, including the width of the subject’s eyes, the length of their fingers and the breadth of their face, with each individual hair – including the eyebrows – inserted strand-by-strand.
