Sauerbier House is a contemporary artspace and place for cultural exchange, located within and around an historic villa in Port Noarlunga, South Australia on the bank of the Onkaparinga River. The Kaurna name for the river is Ngangkiparingga, meaning ‘Women’s River’. The building is a state heritage community asset that has been transformed from a residence (originally George Sauerbier c.1897) into a centre for developing and promoting arts practices, supporting and strengthening the creative cultural expression of the region.

Since September 2015, Sauerbier House has been offering artist and writer in-residence studios and opportunities, along with an art gallery, a writing gallery, and temporary art projects and events in the grounds.

The intention of the site-responsive residencies is to allow artists to produce artwork that engages creatively with Sauerbier House environs, social life and cultural contexts. The fostering of interactions with other artists and writers in residence, as well as locals and visitors to Sauerbier House, is encouraged. Sauerbier House is dedicated to the creation of living cultural dialogues and local creative exchanges.

Each residency is for a period of three calendar months. Artists in residence are chosen via an Expression of Interest process, with the Sauerbier House programme overseen by a reference group with professional art expertise, valuable cultural knowledge and local connections. Sauerbier House will have a diverse mix of artists working from the building at any time; local artists and artists from outside the City of Onkaparinga, both established and emerging, with different backgrounds, practices and voices. Artworks change or unfold calendar monthly.

Sauerbier House will feature additional exhibitions and other curated arts opportunities and events, alongside the artist in residence outcomes.

For visitors at Sauerbier House, there is an opportunity to see artwork being created, to see the often unseen workings of artists and their processes, and to experience the unfolding of an artwork over time. Sauerbier House provides opportunities to interact directly with artists, as each residency will create some form of engagement with publics outside Sauerbier House, through talks, workshops and events.
