The Sydney Food Fairness Alliance is organising this panel and Q&A in Penrith as part of Crave Sydney International Food Festival. Western Sydney is set to experience rapid urbanisation over the next 30 years but should this be at the expense of providing equitably priced fresh produce for the region as well as for Greater Sydney? Local food production reduces food miles, keeps costs down and helps ensure our future food security.

Decisions made today will affect our ability to sustainably produce food in the future. Will Sydney be able to maintain a level of food security, thereby helping us to weather climate-induced price spikes from overseas and interstate markets?

Hear about how Sydney can prioritise one of our most important resources – food – through solutions such as ‘ring fencing’ fertile lands and making simple changes to Local Environment Plans to allow agricultural businesses to be established in areas currently zoned industrial (as is done in Europe and elsewhere). Join in the discussion about keeping costs down as climate change renders traditional oil and phosphate-dependent agriculture increasingly expensive and find out how we can produce and distribute more with less.

Panellists include:

- Costa Georgiadis of SBS TV’s Costa’s Garden Odyssey
- Ian Sinclair, a planner with a focus on food and agriculture
- Professor Phillip O’Neill of the Urban Research Centre
- Councillor Alison McLaren, president of the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC)
- NSW Farmers’ Association President Fiona Simson.

Nominal entry fee covers a glass of NSW organic wine and locally sourced healthy and tasty finger food.
