Winner of the Best Screenplay and Best Actor prizes at the Berlinale, this sumptuous period drama is the true story of an ordinary man who wins a queen's heart and starts a revolution. At its centre is an intriguing love triangle between Danish King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Føesgaard); Struensee (Mads Mikkelsen), man of the Enlightenment; and young Queen Caroline Mathilda (Alicia Vikander). Caroline discovers that her new husband is an imbecile, prone to juvenile behaviour while leaving matters of state to a Council which ignores sweeping changes in Europe and favours the aristocracy over the poor. On a European tour, Christian meets and hires the German doctor Struensee, who begins promoting his progressive ideas in Denmark. In the queen he finds an ideological ally and a lover, but they soon find that their affair provides powerful ammunition for their enemies.
