Imagine you could drill through the earth from one side to another. Would you hit dry land or ocean, city or country? Russian filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky (multiple award winner for Hush! and The Belovs, SFF 1994) uses his camera instead of a drill, switching from one location to another with an elegant swirl of the lens as he turns the world upside down. First stop, a remote ferry crossing in Argentina, where two ramshackle toll collectors banter in the rain. Their antipodean counterpart couldn't be more of a contrast: the bustle of downtown Shanghai. Other pairings are: Russia's dramatic Lake Baikal and snowy Patagonia, where a shepherd tends both sheep and cats; a Botswanan village and a lava-encircled community in Hawaii; and a rocky Spanish slope and a New Zealand beach. Full of divine imagery, this award-winning film posits a unique way of interpreting our world.
