Returning to his homeland for his fifth feature, award-winning director Bence Fliegauf looks at the life of the Romani people in Hungary. This powerful slice of social realism follows a family through their daily activities, as around them an increasing air of menace is building. Fliegauf's film uses true events as its basis: between 2008 and 2009 Romani homes were being attacked, with entire families targeted by racist gangs. Just the Wind recreates this climate of fear and persecution. The film's three leads (all first-time actors cast from the Romani community) are tracked by a roving camera in a naturalistic style reminiscent of Gus Van Sant's Elephant; as in that film, the mundane is contrasted with the horrific. Winner of the Amnesty Prize at Berlin, Just the Wind highlights the ingrained nature of racism and the isolating effects of poverty.
