Krishna is a Bollywood Dance Drama in English with Indian songs.

Shobana, the divine danseuse has come out with a brilliant new dance / drama production which is a fine mixture of flamboyance, subtlety, artistry, divinity and above all ornamented with originality. She did not stick to a genre of dance form; rather put to good use other dance forms to give variety and flair. It was already enacted at some reputed venues and there are glowing tributes expressed by reputed reviewers. Shobana needs no introduction, being a renowned actress, dancer, writer and choreographer all rolled into a fine individual. She is now back into doing what she knows and likes to do in the best possible way. She assumes multiple roles of conceiving the plot, writing, choreographing and presenting a dance drama she grades as ‘Dialogue drama’. She named the drama as ‘Krishna’, because it is Krishna all the way through. The brilliant dancer is bursting with joy and emotions as she unveils her new creation. She said “I felt a calling inside me to do this with hopes of success forthcoming. I have put my heart and soul in this to come up with this show which I hope people can relate to”; it is a fervent hope not a cocky prophesy.

As the title hints it is the story of our favourite God (Indian / Hindu), Krishna, who personifies happiness, kind heartedness and goodness. He is the dancing Divine Being, playing Venu and his life lends too many myriads of interpretations, which are dazzling and puzzling too.

She opinions her feelings on ‘Krishna’ thus: “Krishna has not been and cannot be explored in his entirety. A dancer’s depiction is different from the hero pictured in a grand mother’s tale or the protagonist of a cartoon show. He appeals to everybody at some level or other. That is why Krishna the God is unique: She attempts to string together various sub-stories and happenings together and create a realistic pattern of Krishna the lovable super human who is adored by us all. She has made the show in the form of a musical in which various genres of dances are interwoven aesthetically to create some uniqueness. The dance styles incorporated includes folk, classical and even a bit of Bollywood cinematic formats. After all Bollywood variety is incorporated in ‘Ras Leela’ dance, that has a tinge of eroticism in it. Shobana being a persevering researcher has drawn from Gita, Osho, Bengalee folk themes, Tamil, Malayalee and other sources to get a fine mix of music and storytelling formats through dances. To add variety and newness she has composed her own brand of music, in which there is English music as well. Over all it will be a fine blend of relaxing music. The principal aim of Shobana is to spread the preaching’s of the Lord. Let me make it clear that this is for the viewing pleasure of common people not for the hard core discipline form of dancing.

After doing the basic writings and the frame work completed it took a further eight months of intensive practice of 50 or so artists handpicked by Shobana to do full justice to what she intended to do. She says “the commitment and enthusiasm of my students need to be lauded. Broken ankles and sprains did not stop them from practice. They never gave up”

A lot of Celebrities lend their voice and expertise to realise this dream project. On the technical side Oscar winning Rasool Pookutty has done the sound features, Rajeevan did the Art, Sabana Azmi as Gaandhari, Kokona Sen as Radha, Nandita Das as Draupathi, Prabhu as Bheeman, Radhika as Devaki and Milind Soman etc contributed immensely for the success of the play by lending their distinct voices. Sobhana is Krishna and this is a demanding and key role to play. Actor Soorya lends his vocals to portray Arjuna. In this show Shobana’s Krishna has six costume changes from the start till the show ends. Shobana has endeavoured to make the complicated dance movements as communicative as possible. The languid grace of her performance makes us feel that she is sheer poetry in motion.
