Marina Abramovic's blockbuster 2010 exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art, which drew over half a million people, forms the backbone of this fascinating documentary on the radical performance artist's life and work. In his feature-length debut, filmmaker Matthew Akers follows the preparation for the mammoth show as he tracks Serbian-born Abramovic's 40-year career, including her collaboration with one-time lover Ulay. The exhibition's centrepiece consists of the artist seated at a table, slowly lifting her gaze as audience members one by one take the opposite chair. The hard-working and photogenic Abramovic performs this every day of the three-month exhibition, inducing an array of emotions from the individual participants and milling crowds. It's to the filmmaker's credit that the simple directness and profundity of the moment shines through in this eloquent film.
