A wealth of local talent sets high standard for this year’s Newcastle Craft & Sewing Show.

Fresh, vibrant and fun, the Newcastle Craft and Sewing Show is set to transform the Newcastle Entertainment Centre into a craft lover’s haven from August 16th to 19th, with an array of interactive features, displays and attractions, loads of supplies, hands-on classes and seminars.

The four day event will feature a spectacular mix of works including a contemporary exhibition of textile artworks. With the theme, Beneath the Southern Sky providing a wealth of inspiration, artists from across the world were invited to create a textile artwork. The vast and varied interpretations include landscapes, seascapes and even social interpretations, with 30 of the best set to go on display. Equally diverse is a special Fertile Imagination-themed display of quilts by members of the NSW Quilter’s Guild.

Indicative of the event’s crafty diversity this year featured artists include Copacabana local, Brenda Gael Smith who has found new ways to use household products to become one of Australia’s leading textile artists. Brenda will be demonstrating how to use cleaning products to transfer images onto fabrics, whipping up textile dyes in the food processor and using potato mashers to print contemporary designs.

Visitors will also be treated to works by members of local Guilds from both Newcastle and surrounding areas, including, the Embroiderers’ Guild NSW Inc (Newcastle Branch), Hunter Valley Tapestry Group Inc, Porcelain Arts Association Hunter Valley and Maitland Patchwork Quilters Inc.

Another Show favourite, Texstyle, will showcase the rising talents of 2011 HSC Textile and Design students.

For those who love to get hands on, the Newcastle Craft & Sewing Show features a range of crafty how-to activities including; the discovery desk with demonstrations from a wide range of exhibitors and make and take classes, where visitors can create unique projects.

Whether its beading, stamping, quilting, knitting, painting, textile art and more – the Newcastle Craft and Sewing Show is designed to inspire, delight and touch your crafting heart.
