Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan (Clouds of May, SFF 2000; Climates, SFF 2007; Three Monkeys, SFF 2009) takes on the police procedural, and the result is a beautifully layered narrative in which every line of dialogue contributes to the solving of the puzzle. A man is murdered, a confession made and a group of men go out in search of the corpse. Among them is the accused, along with gravediggers, policemen, a doctor and a prosecutor. Together they search the Anatolian steppe for the elusive corpse in spots that look overly similar to each other. As the night progresses, the men talk about subjects as diverse as cheese, ethics and death, and gradually these anecdotes and snatches of conversation reveal themselves as clues. Winner of the Grand Prix at Cannes, Once Upon a Time in Anatolia is a patient masterpiece, one in which each frame is a stunning work of art.
