The provocative Pink Ribbons, Inc. tackles the sacred cow that is the breast cancer awareness movement's highly recognisable fundraising campaign. While never denying the impact of this widespread disease on individuals, family and society (roughly one in eight women will develop the cancer), Léa Pool's film, based on Samantha King's book of the same name, and featuring interviews with cancer victims as well as fund executives, sets out to expose the lie at the centre of the pink-themed promotion. For example, campaign supporter Estée Lauder has carcinogens in its products; Yoplait had growth hormones in its yoghurt until it was embarrassed into taking them out - and how appropriate to a healthy lifestyle is KFC? Worryingly, the focus on corporate fundraising has impacted the kind of research that's being undertaken. It's enough to make you see red!
