Australian fashion set to Monopolise the catwalks!

Ten of Australia’s most talented design students are literally set to Monopolise the catwalk and reveal a new game plan for Australian fashion, when they unveil their new collections.

Australia’s hottest young fashion designers and final year students from the renowned Whitehouse Institute of Design have drawn inspiration from the world’s most iconic board game and pop-culture phenomenon, Monopoly, for their highly anticipated, end of year collections.

Two winning designers one each from Sydney and Melbourne will earn the Monopoly award of excellence and $2000 and the judging will be based on both technical merit and the influence of Monopoly in their designs.

The students were given carte blanche with Monopoly’s iconography, logos, fonts, colours, money, tokens, houses, hotels, property, chance and community chest cards, on which to base their collections. Like most, all had a wealth of childhood Monopoly memories to draw on, as 23 year old Tatum Anne Macartney who aimed to inspire other to grow ‘young’ with her collection said, “When I play Monopoly it enlightens the inner child within and I remember my true self that is like childhood; innocent, joyous and free.”

Their interpretations ranged from city slick, dress for success collections to urban street savvy daywear while others exuded the elegance of the good old days and the entrepreneurial spirit that defines the board game.

The results and ranges are as diverse and eclectic as the students that have created them. When talking about key influences, 24 year old Amelia Hermawan explained that her collection was reminiscent of the stylish times when the game first came into play saying, “In 1935 clothing was simpler, with fewer options obtaining a more glamorous effect.” Benjamin Warmuth’s range, aimed to preserve a wearable elegance while simultaneously adopting creative playful designs that one immediately associates with Monopoly, while reflecting “consumerism, wealth and the yuppie culture.” Conversely, 21 year old Emma Jacobs’ range was “influenced by black humour and paradoxes;” with her adapting and reinterpreting aspects, such as “Don’t pass go, a quirky journey of actions.”

Like the game itself, 24 year old Ella Drayson is hoping to be a huge success story. She says, “My signature collection is designed to be sold to an international market and gain a cult like following of creative individuals.”
