On Friday 21 September, the Russian Nights Club in Bondi will be transformed into one of the most curiously exciting and edgy shows of all time – The Russian Rock ‘n’ Roll Burlesque Circus.
Held this year as part of Sydney Fringe, the extravagant Russian Rock ’n’ Roll Burlesque Circus is a spectacle that needs to be seen to be believed, where rock bands meet burlesque dancers, poets and comedians; cabaret divas meet fire eaters, jugglers and circus freaks all wrapped up in a magical circus tent-themed room.
Artists joining this year’s Burlesque Circus include exotic temptresses Paloma Negra, Selina Vixen, Veronica Bloom and Hedy Bella Nova; local rock bands Smoke and Silver and Ruby Wilde; cabaret divas Edwina Blush and Mischa Arnold; emerging rock goddess Jaclyn Underwood; amazing contact juggler and steampunk favourite Calamity Hawkins; poet maestro Hugh Wade and many more.
The elaborate show is the brainchild of friends Donna Lorenz (aka Ring Mistress Donnamatrix) and Marc Barrow (aka Ring Maestro Marc), who devised the inaugural event last year to bring together their love of all things rock and edgy arts to raise money for their friend’s cancer treatment.
Although their friend lost her brave health battle this year, the show will go on in her honour and now raise funds for The Bre Taylor Art & Music School being built in her name by charity OrphFund for an orphanage in Sierra Leone.
Ring Mistress Donnamatrix explains: “Last year was a labour of love and a surprisingly wild success in many ways. Artists and audience alike had such a great time and it was a really special evening where all kinds of crazy creativity collided as the Russian Rock ’n’ Roll Burlesque Circus was born. Bre wanted us to keep going and it’s fantastic that, while we miss her dearly, this ‘celebration on the edge’ can continue to grow and bring such happiness to everyone in her name.”
All profits from ticket sales and the art auction on the night will go directly to OrphFund for the Bre Taylor Art and Music School and an Artist Amnesty Box will be on site for all guests to donate any spare musical instruments or art supplies to fill the new school. Everyone is encouraged to get dressed up for the show, so get your fishnets, air guitars, leathers, feathers and juggling balls ready to rock!
Tickets are $45 and available through Sydney Fringe box office or on the door. For details, visit http://2012.sydneyfringe.com/event/circus-and-burlesque/russian-rocknroll-burlesque-circus
