A divine manifestation sets a community abuzz, leading to the construction of a temple that threatens the innocence of a small Indian village. A humorous and irreverent take on religious fervor, Umesh Vinayak Kulkarni's The Temple is set in the small village of Mangrool, in Maharashtra, which has suffered from years of bad weather and drought. One afternoon, Kesha, a herdsman, has a 'divine vision' of Lord Dutta emerging from a fig tree. Kesha announces his vision, and word spreads throughout the village. It does not take long for the villagers to see the opportunity for change, and for riches. Politicians and the media join the fray, and plans are made for the construction of a temple for Lord Dutta. Along with the temple a commercial machinery develops. The village of Mangrool will never be the same.
