As opposed to traditional subtractive processes such as machining, Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a method for the fabrication of parts by the successive build-up of materials.

Additive Manufacturing can be used for the fabrication of prototypes, functional parts, casting patterns and tooling. Also known as 3D printing, Additive Manufacturing offers a number of potential advantages over conventional manufacturing processes including:
- Minimal waste
- No tooling required
- Design freedom
- Rapid turnaround time

Whilst the above statements are largely true, there are also some caveats and the selection of the most appropriate additive process for each application is critical if both the technical and economic objectives are to be met.

With Additive Manufacturing system costs ranging from $400 to $3M there are many factors to consider when evaluating this process for your part or business. This workshop presents information on the different types of Additive Manufacturing processes available, their applications and advantages and also offers information on the considerations required when evaluating the relevance of Additive Manufacturing in your business.

QMI Solutions is supported by the Queensland Government Department of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning (DSDIP) and we invite you to join us to find out more about this new technology.
