Each year Avoca Beach Picture Theatre, Gosford City Council and the people of the Central Coast celebrate International Women’s Day at the Avoca Beach Picture Theatre. ‘It’s always a very emotional night’ says Theatre owner Beth Hunter, ‘a night where our community is stirred to strive for a better life for all.’

This year, Chaika brings beautiful songs and stories of women; steeped in traditional music with expressive and intricate instrumentals – clarinet, accordian, violin, double bass and their haunting vocal solos and exquisite four part harmonies. The stories will leave you laughing, crying and determined to make the world a better place. The music and songs of Chaika are both eclectic and beautiful, fusing traditional elements of Balkan and European music with original pieces tinged with jazz and celtic music.

This year’s film for International Women’s Day is For Love and Money introduced by Co-Director Jeni Thornley. With contributions from hundreds of women and over 200 Australian films this unique, superbly crafted pictorial history of Australian women chronicles the cycles of women's gains and losses as they are moved in and out of the workforce, showing how women have fought and organised for equality and wage justice for over a century. As women continue the unfinished campaigns for equal pay, maternity leave and childcare, this important film assists us to remember what’s been achieved, where we should be going. ‘Instructive, entertaining, proactive and educational.’ - The Age
