Celebrate the Year of the Snake at the Chinese New Year festival in Box Hill on 9 February 2013.

Head to central Box Hill to celebrate Chinese New Year and enjoy entertainment and activities for the whole family.

Whitehorse City Council is proud to once again support the Asian Business Association of Whitehorse to stage one of the largest Chinese New Year celebrations in Melbourne. The 12-hour event will be held in and around the Box Hill Mall and along part of Whitehorse Road.

The festival will showcase Chinese culture with the vibrant spectacle of the Parade of Choi Sun (Chinese God of Fortune) as well as traditional lion and dragon dancers weaving through the crowd to count in the new year.

Highlights include a firecracker display, martial arts demonstrations, the Victoria Police Show Band, singers, dancers, games and amusement rides. Visitors will also be able to visit or pray at the giant Buddha statue.

A giant snake on display inside Centro Box Hill will amaze the crowds. Local school children created the snake for the event with the help of the Box Hill Community Arts Centre and the Asian Business Association of Whitehorse. The snake will be on display from 30 January to 10 February.

Box Hill Mall will host stalls selling Chinese New Year souvenirs and merchandise including a market of unique Asian cuisine.

This cross-cultural event is ‘Waste Wise’ and Council is working with the Asian Business Association of Whitehorse to encourage stallholders to reduce and recycle waste.

Festival volunteers will assist visitors in sorting their waste into the appropriate bins for recycling.

SBS Radio will broadcast live from the event.
