Crown’s inaugural Mooncake Festival spans the property with an interactive market-style event hosted in the Atrium, lanterns and fireworks on the Riverwalk and authentic banquet menus offered in Asian restaurants. Crown invites guests to embrace one of the largest events on the Asian calendar and enjoy free entertainment suitable for the entire family this September.

Held in honour of the Moon when it is at its brightest and fullest, the festival signifies the end of the fall harvest for the farmers. Traditionally the occasion is celebrated with families returning home and admiring the full moon together whilst eating Mooncakes. To celebrate this tradition, Crown’s Mooncake Festival will feature a series of activities and entertainment including Mooncake making demonstrations, sweet food stalls, special banquet menus and a host of cultural activities and interactive performances.

Crown’s Atrium will be transformed into an Asian market with a stunning internally lit lantern display which signifies the wish for the sun's light and warmth to return after winter. The lanterns have also come to represent the festival’s celebrations and fertility, based around the moon’s cycle. The beautiful display featuring the black, red and green lanterns will dress the pop-up market throughout the festival.

Making and sharing Mooncakes is one of the hallmark traditions of this festival and every day the Atrium will host Mooncake making demonstrations. Lotus paste with egg yolk, melon seeds and Snow Skin Moon Cakes will be made using traditional methods for guests to learn techniques and stock up on these sweet treats for family and friends. The art of Chinese tea making demonstrations will also be carried out daily providing a soothing experience and taste testing.

Another daily delight for guests includes a traditional Chinese seal carver who will be creating delicate, unique and personalised Chinese Seal from jade, marble and other stones. Marvel at the talent of this art form mastered over many years of dedication to the tradition.

Friday to Sunday during the festival will involve entertainment for the entire family, including the Sabrina Dance Group performing the Lantern fairy dance. Not to be missed is the spectacular lion dance processions which take place throughout the event starting at the Atrium and traversing the Riverwalk and making their way around Crown. According to Chinese legend the ceremonial dances serve to ward off evil spirits through the thunderous sound of loud drums and firecrackers.

During the final weekend of the festival, the renowned Chinese artist, Master Zeng has been invited from Beijing to Melbourne by the Australian National Arts Academy. Master Zeng will make a daily appearance to create traditional Chinese calligraphy to be performed on the floor on large pieces of Chinese rice paper to traditional music.

A spectacular fireworks display will take place on Saturday 21 September at 7:30pm along the Yarra River in front of Crown Riverwalk. Fireworks are customary to traditional celebrations to ward off evil spirits.

The Mooncake Festival is associated with harmony and unity, esoteric knowledge and spiritual discovery. Indulge all the senses and sample the traditional delicacies for the entire family throughout the Mooncake Festival.
