Thursday 1 August 2013 - Exhibition Opening and Cocktail Event

J.W. Lindt Exhibition to be officially opened by the Deputy Lord Mayor of The City of Sydney Councillor Robyn Kemmis

The Gallery Foundation, Grafton Regional Gallery in conjunction with the Royal Australian Historical Society invites you to an exhibition of J.W. Lindt's photographs and special cocktail event and fundraising evening in support of the Gallery’s ongoing J.W. Lindt Research Project. An auction of artwork by Bundjalung, Gumbaingirr and Yaegl artists will be conducted by Jordan Reed of Sotheby’s Australia.

This exhibition will feature J.W. Lindt’s 1874 photographs and Northern Rivers Aboriginal artefacts. The J.W. Lindt Exhibition will be open for viewing over three days until Saturday 3 August 2013. Using the wet-plate process he photographed the Clarence Valley district and its aboriginals between 1873 and 1874. For his portraits, Lindt asked local Aboriginal people to come to his studio and pose amongst props he had gathered from various sources. These images became the most widely distributed images of Aboriginal people in the 19th century.

Tickets $100 including hors d'oeuvres by Antony Perring of 'Blue Chook'

About the speaker: Dr Nicola Teffer was the 2012 Keesing Fellow at the State Library studying representations of Aborigines and Europeans on the Clarence River Frontier, 1864-1900. She has curated exhibitions for the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Historic Houses Trust and the City of Sydney and is a lecturer at the Sydney College of the Arts.

Saturday 3 August 2013 - J.W. Lindt Exhibition and Documentary with Library Open Day

We are also delighted to announce that that ABC has given permission to show The Light of Day at 1.00 pm which focuses on the Cullen family quest to find the stories behind the photographs. We also hoping to have a Q&A session with the journalists involved in making the documentary.

The library will also be open the public for tours and research. There will also be a number of short talks on the RAHS’ photographic collections. Further details will be available on our website.
