Australian-born dancer and choreographer Joanne Leighton will perform her signature solo, Made in Taiwan. The dance is a play on copy, erasure, and the variations that a changing perspective on the same material suggests. The unfolding of the piece is permeated by fractures, interruptions and cuts, often created by the public themselves.

An exercise in choreographic counterfeit, Made in Taiwan invites us to recreate a dance, with Leighton as our guide. The action is built up interactively with the audience, making each performance unique. The material for the solo comes from the choreographer recycling, not copying, the language of the great names of contemporary dance, from Pina Bausch to Merce Cunningham.

Joanne Leighton will also engage the public in creating a new work – to be entitled Made in Perth – which will be introduced as a free “taster” workshop in the Courtyard of the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia at 2.00pm on Saturday 9 November. This event is open to non-dancers from all walks of life and will lead to the unveiling of Made in Perth as a major public dance event in 2014.

Presented by STRUT dance in association with the Centre chorégraphique national de Franche-Comté à Belfort (France).
