MCO’s final concert for 2013 brings together two of the most enduringly popular works for string orchestra, Barber’s Adagio for Strings and Elgar’s Serenade, and two concerti featuring the piano, one traditional and one contemporary.

Samuel Barber’s Adagio, described as “the saddest music ever written”, is a powerful, heartfelt elegy taking full advantage of the rich sound of MCO strings. The Elgar Serenade is a wistful exploration with some of the composer’s most searching writing. Bursting through the program like a joyous ray of sunshine, Mozart’s vibrant and youthful Piano Concerto No. 13 highlights the virtuosity of pianist and composer Benjamin Martin, whose new triple concerto, Trinitas, also receives its premiere in this concert.
