From the festival director:

Welcome to the 23rd Melbourne Queer Film Festival! It’s exciting times here at MQFF headquarters. Along with another fabulous selection of quality queer cinema, we’ve got a number of ‘firsts’ this Festival, which are sure to excite our audiences as much as they’ve excited us.

We’ve leapt into the 21st Century with a spanking new ticketing system, a smart phone app from which you can not only peruse the program in all its glory but also buy tickets, a swish new screening venue in addition to our Cultural Partner ACMI, a brand new Festival Lounge, an Australian World Premiere Feature film AND our very first 3D session!

After wading through a record 600-plus submissions, our selection panel has put together a cracking program of films, panels and special presentations for our loyal audience this year. We’re pretty damn chuffed to be presenting two Melbourne-born and bred feature film Premieres. Definitely book early to catch Monster Pies and our closing night film Submerge. Our talented Australian filmmakers also feature throughout the program across documentary and shorts packages and competing for cash awards in our Celluloid Casserole, and City of Melbourne Award packages.

Our international program is awash with high quality cinema with award-winning films spread throughout the program such as Bye Bye Blondie, Keep the Lights On, Cockpit, North Sea Texas, Yossi and Sexual Tension: Volatile all bound to be hot tickets. Our Cultural Partner ACMI is co-presenting our two Centrepiece titles Zenne Dancer and Beyond the Walls – two outstanding films that are not to be missed.

And now for something completely different – our first 3D session! We’re incredibly excited to be presenting this brilliant biopic about the life of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman, A Liar’s Autobiography at new screening venue Hoyts Melbourne Central. A veritable smorgasbord of laughs, lies, and general queer buffoonery all in 3D, Chapman’s film is an absolute highlight, and tickets will no doubt fly out the door.

Other special presentations include our annual midnight session, a panel for filmmakers about utilising crowd funding for their next film project, a panel on the representation of queers on the small screen, and a step back in time slide night with the Gay and Lesbian Archive.

Check out our new Festival Lounge situated at Beer DeLuxe on the Flinders street side of Federation Square, at ground level, right next to ACMI. The Lounge will feature a selection of great music and food, as well as tasty wine, beer, cider and bubbly provided by our sponsors, as well as a whole bunch of fun queer-focused activities to add to your Festival experience. Speed dating anyone?

We haven’t skimped on the documentary package this year with several award-winning docos screening such as Call me Kuchu, I am Gay and Muslim, Turning, and The British Guide to Showing Off.

Please vote for your favourite films and reward our filmmakers for their efforts and don’t forget to see something you wouldn’t normally see!

Enjoy your Festival!
