SEPTEMBER 22: BADLANDS by Terence Malik (1973)

A young couple go on a Midwest crime spree in this assured debut feature. Kit (Martin Sheen) and teen baton-twirler Holly (Sissy Spacek) take off after Holly's father is shot dead. Inaugurating the use of voice-over narration, that he would continue in Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, Malick juxtaposes Holly's flat cliché infused readings from her diary against the banal and grim reality of the fugitive couple's surrounds. M. Moderate violence.
