Karrinyup Shopping Centre and The Salvation Army are calling upon the people of Perth to donate a piece of warm clothing, as part of its annual Shed Your Winter Coat Appeal.

Monday 10th June marks the launch of the 2013 Shed Your Winter Coat Appeal, an initiative created by Karrinyup Shopping Centre back in 2010 in support of the ever-important Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal.

Andrew Wilkinson, Marketing Manager of Karrinyup Shopping Centre said the Shed Your Winter Coat Appeal is an annual Winter call-out to the Perth community to donate as many coats, jackets, baby clothes, jumpers and blankets as possible for individuals and families in desperate need.

“By simply donating one warm item to the Shed Your Winter Coat Appeal – whether it’s an old coat, a baby jumpsuit or singlets, a pair of long pants or a small blanket – you will be making a big difference to those less fortunate, especially during the tougher months of Winter.

“We hope to raise over 1200 articles of warm clothing, but this is still just the tip of the iceberg. The West Coast Fever are fantastic and have only been happy to help in raise awareness of this campaign through the entire netball community,” concluded Mr Wilkinson.

According to Red Shield Appeal Community Engagement Representative, Nigel Pitkin, for individuals and families most disadvantaged in the community, simple life necessities deemed essential for living such as clothing and food have become a real challenge to afford.

“A recent survey* of over 2,700 people, who have called upon the help of The Salvation Army, revealed that over half had gone without meals and two-thirds had cut down on basic necessities. This is why initiatives such as Shed Your Winter Coat Appeal are so important and why every coat donated this year will count,” said Mr Pitkin.

Coats, jackets, jumpers, blankets and warm clothing (must be laundered, clean and in good condition) for children and babies can be dropped into the collection bin located at Karrinyup Shopping Centre in the Centre Court from 10am Monday to Saturday, and 12pm on Sundays from the 10th June to the 7th July.
