The iconic Iron Houses, situated in Melbourne’s South, evoke powerful memories of life during the gold rush years, when South Melbourne was known as Emerald Hill and migrants flocked to Victoria in search of golden riches.

Although many tales have already been told around the historic pioneer homes, this year the City of Port Phillip and National Trust of Australia (Victoria) are giving Victorians a chance to rewrite the chronicles of the Iron Houses, through the ‘Stories of the Iron Houses’ short story writing competition launching on Saturday 11 March, 2013.

The Natural Trust will also host Adult and Children’s Research Days on Saturday 9 March (Adults) and Sunday 10 March (Children) to provide entrants with an in-depth history tour and creative writing workshop, held at the heart of the story in the Portable Iron Houses.
