Melbourne Fine Art is proud to present an exhibition featuring the works of The Saudeks- Jan Saudek and Sara Saudkova. Jan Saudek is the most renowned Czech photographer in the world. His life is much like his work, tumultuous and free spirited. Saudek has taken part in over 400 one-man shows.

As a concentration camp survivor Saudek was the victim of a stolen childhood. A time period that forever influences his artistic persona.

His early art photography is noted for its evocation of childhood innocence, something he lost at a very early age due to the atrocities of World War II. Later his works often portrayed the evolution from child to adult. Saudek often explores and portrays opposites within his work namely the relationship between man and woman, age and youth, and clothed and unclothed in order to elicit stronger responses from viewers.

His best-known work is renowned for its hand-tinted portrayals of painterly dream worlds, often inhabited by nude or semi-nude figures surrounded by bare plaster walls or painted backdrops. His use of crumbling walls is an everlasting reminder of the inevitability of decay.

Saudek worked clandestinely as a photographer under communism. His work is characterised by an interest in beauty and personal freedom with metaphors of resistance, escapism and individual expression. The artist found it very important to connect with his audience. ‘If a photograph does not tell a story it’s not a photograph’ said Saudek, ‘Perhaps it’s the story of all of our thoughts, those that become public and challenge conventional wisdom and those that remain confined by shame’.

This exhibition will feature works by Saudek alongside his protégé and daughter in law Sara Saudkova. Saudkova studying under Saudek began making her own photographs in Jan’s studio. While her images share certain stylistic qualities with Saudek her imagery shows a touch of femininity and optimism that comes from growing up in a time without war.

The exhibition will be held from 10 October to 24 October at MiFA Gallery, Level 1, 278 Collins Street Melbourne, 3000.
