The Prophet, authored by Lebanese poet, philosopher and artist Khalil Gibran (1883-1931) is one of the world’s most widely read books. ARIA award-winning oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros will premiere a new work inspired by The Prophet and perform with the Song Company on a nine city tour through March and April – including Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Newcastle and Wollongong.

Joseph Tawadros has risen to prominence in Australia by successfully developing the ancient traditions of Arabic music in a western environment. His engagement with the writings of Gibran has resulted in one solo disc for oud (The Prophet, 2009), as well as a number of works on Concerto of The Greater Sea, recently released to great acclaim. This new collaboration with the singers of the Song Company delves into the origins of musical expression, guided by the writings of Gibran.

Other composers on the program are Hildegard von Bingen and Fyodor Krestyanin. Performing in this concert are Clive Birch (bass), Mark Donnelly (baritone), Richard Black (tenor), Anna Fraser (soprano) and Susannah Lawergren (soprano).

Roland Peelman is legendary in Australian musical circles. He has been directing the Song Company for 21 years building an international reputation for vocal flexibility and innovation. This year’s theme of ’air’ is part of a four year cycle exploring the elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire.
