The Banff Mountain Film Festival is reaching new heights when it returns to Adelaide on May 24.
Adelaide filmgoers will need to switch into high gear this May when the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour heads to the Capri Theatre. The festival, which features a selection of the world’s most captivating mountain-themed short films, will leave audiences on the edges of their seats.
Designed to intrigue, inspire and enthral, the festival showcases films made by the world’s most extreme adventure filmmakers. Each year, these bold thrill-seekers reach dizzying new heights as they strive to bring audiences ever more daring footage. This year they don’t disappoint; this year’s films are packed with action, adventure and adrenalin, and pay respect to the natural wonders and unpredictable conditions that make mountain landscapes so unique.
The festival is coming to Adelaide hot on the heels of the largest – and one of the most prestigious – mountain events in the world: the Banff Mountain Festival. This iconic event takes place every November in the mountain town of Banff, in Canada. More than 300 mountain culture, adventure and exploration films are shown during the week-long celebration. Each year, a selection of award winners and audience favourites then visits 35 countries around the globe as part of the festival’s official world tour.
This year, the Australian line-up features two-and-a-half hours of sublime footage shot in some of the most wild and remote corners of the world. Sure to get hearts racing, it showcases films packed full of mesmerising cinematography, thought-provoking storylines and adrenalin-inducing action sequences.
From remote, snow-covered Arctic slopes, to majestic unclimbed Antarctic peaks, the films lead viewers on exciting, fast-paced journeys to some of the most isolated locations on the planet.
Each short offers audiences a rare glimpse through the lenses of some of the world’s most accomplished climbers, paddlers, skaters, snowboarders, mountain-bikers and explorers alive today. Witness their thrilling highs and intense lows as they push the bar ever higher in their quests to climb more challenging summits; to reach faster downhill speeds; and to master human flight.
Meet today’s adventure greats and take your hat off to mountain veterans, who share their stories about the triumphs and harsh realities of mountain life. Laugh as you see expert skiers and snowboarders take a light-hearted approach to the winter chill, and see plenty of snow, skiing and skin as they hit the slopes wearing nothing but avalanche beacons and smiles.
Take a high-speed plunge down gnarly alpine runs with expert mountain-bike riders; follow in the treads of the early cyclists; and share in the joy of two young adventurers as they set up an unlikely base in an out-of-the-way spot tucked between the shores of the icy Atlantic and the rocky slopes of a remote Arctic island. See them embrace the low light of a northern winter to surf and ski in isolation.
Tickets are on sale now. Audiences are advised to book early as screenings often sell out in advance.
