Canberra craftaholics to gather at Australia’s most popular craft and quilt event

Canberrans to marvel at the skill of Australia’s creative best when Australia’s most popular craft and quilting event, the Craft & Quilt Fair comes to Exhibition Park In Canberra from August 21 - 24, 2014.

Sewing newbies, hipsters, artists, designers, families and textile-lovers will be inspired to thread their needles in new ways and experience craft as never before at the event renowned for its world class displays, non-stop classes and workshops, latest and greatest craft products, and inspirational and knowledgeable special guests.

The fair will feature 173 quilts in the Canberra Quilters Members’ Exhibition which will be officially opened by Canberra local and former Federal Member, Annette Ellis on Thursday 21st August at 11 a.m. The wonderful display will showcase an explosion of colour, interesting techniques and innovative design from both amateur and professional quilters including modern quilts, small Japanese projects, ‘row by row’ and Art quilts – anything goes! Additionally, featured in the challenge quilts section will be a range of creative quilts based on the theme, ‘Opposites’ providing an endless source of inspiration. Volunteers from the group, Quilts for Others (QFO) will also demonstrate the stages of the quilting process, from cutting to piecing, quilting and the final binding.

An international textile art exhibition presented by the vibrant, progressive and dynamic members of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) will wow visitors in celebration of their 25th anniversary, with a travelling trunk show of 50 small exhibition art quilts. Part of SAQA’s eight different travelling shows, Trunk Show G, will go on display at the Fair as part of an Australia-wide tour, and includes quilts of a wide variety of styles, techniques and fibres by masters in their field including internationally renowned art quilters Dianne Firth (Australia), Hsin-Chen Lin (Taiwan), Alicia Merrett (England) and Cynthia St Charles (USA).

There will also be a selection of 30 finalists’ entries from the AQC Challenge where artists were invited to create a quilt inspired by the theme ‘Ten’ – resulting in a diverse, personal and inspiring mix of interpretations. The best of the best of Australia’s home grown talent will be on show in the ‘Greatest Australian Quilts of the Modern Era’ exhibition, that encompass the most prevalent styles through our own unique quilting history.

The Canberra Craft & Quilt Fair will also showcase a host of inspiring craft ideas, make and take classes and workshops, including card making and scrapbooking, machine embroidery, Japanese fabric glasses cases, modern lampshades, crafting stunning resin or beaded jewellery and learning how to design and create homemade Christmas decorations well ahead of the silly season.

Craft enthusiasts will also have a special opportunity to stock up and be inspired by specialty retailers selected from all over Australia and their latest supplies including high-tech and coveted sewing and craft gadgets and tools, unique and exquisite trimmings, ribbons, fabrics and buttons and beautifully designed and easy-to-use craft and quilt kits.

The Canberra Craft & Quilt Fair is a great opportunity to see inspirational displays, meet experts, attend workshops and classes and see, try and buy the best in crafting supplies from card making, scrapbooking, knitting, embroidery to sewing, quilt making, mixed media, jewellery-making and more.
