'The sound draws you in with so much flavour and layering and depth that the air you breathe seems thick. Even eyes seem tunnel-visioned...' - Spaceship News
After an 18-month, self-imposed exile, robbie jalapeno and the bureaucrats are finally returning to the stage with a very special show at the Astor Lounge. Most of that time was spent flitting between studios recording their ambitious long-play release, Carmina de Nihil. In doing so, the band has achieved something perhaps no other band has ever done for a debut release - created a concept album.
Carmina de Nihil, (Latin for 'Songs about Nothing') blends lyrical themes of existentialism, feminism and the frustrated inertia of modern times with the band's trademark swamp-infused, post-punk rhythms to produce an individual and timeless record.
Twelve tracks in just short of an hour of music showcase a unique take on the world. Never allegorical, ever doubtful, a love song is never simply a declaration for this band, but a moment to pause and ponder. World music-esque, with jungle percussion and the gorgeous strings of a single guitar, mandolin, violin and bass produce a mellow yet contemporary swing on stereotypical Mariachi. It produces the will to explore...and devour every single beat produced by every single element.
Joining the band will be special guest Elk Bell, who also provided vocals for the album.
