Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) in partnership with the Refugee Action Program at SCAAB presents the inaugural Emerge Under the Big Top Festival at Dandenong Market on Sunday 8th June from 10am – 4pm.

Come along and discover the many flavours, aromas, sounds and colours of multicultural Dandenong with this free massive daylong celebration of arts and culture from local refugee and emerging communities who now call City of Greater Dandenong home.

The day kicks off at 10am with a mouth-watering array of delicious cultural foods and cooking demonstrations, while Dandenong’s fresh young talent vies for the top spot on Emerge Under the Big Top Talent Contest. The festival will feature two stages of music and dance with performances from local Hazara pop sensation Taqi Khan, tropical dance from Fiesta Kriol, Afro- Brazilian rhythms from Bahia, Burundian hip hop duo Flybz, Burundian Gospel Choir, Sudanese songstress Ajak Kwai, headline Sol Nation and more. Don’t miss a parade of fashion, African hairstyling demos, tea, coffee and henna rituals from around the globe!

Full program to be announced

With approximately 60% of residents born overseas from over 150 different birthplaces and 55% from non-English speaking backgrounds, Dandenong has the most culturally and linguistically diverse community in Melbourne. This rich diversity will enable visitors to the Emerge Under the Big Top Festival to enjoy a huge range of self-expression through music and dance performances from all over the world.

Emerge Under the Big Top is part of the Emerge Festival 2014 presenting new refugee and emerging artists who have recently settled in Australia from May 17 – July 5. Produced MAV in partnership with local communities, Emerge Festival is presented annually in six locations around Victoria to celebrate and acknowledge the important contributions of local newly arrived refugee and emerging multicultural communities. The inaugural Emerge Under the Big Top festival builds on MAV’s successful community cultural development work in Dandenong over the past five years and is an outcome of MAV’s Emerge Cultural Hubs program which aims to empower and create connections for artists and communities from refugee backgrounds.
