'END OF DAY' an exhibition of oil paintings by Liz Waller.

Cobargo Creators feature artist for January 2015 is Liz Waller. “End of Day” is the Brogo artist’s latest collection of oils and these will be on display in Black Wattle Gallery, showcase gallery in the Cobargo Creators Centre. The exhibition opens at 10am on Monday December 29 and continues until 30 January 2015.

Liz has lived in the Bega Valley for over 30 years and the Brogo district for 15 of those years. After undertaking certificate drawing at Bega TAFE, Liz commenced watercolour painting 23 years ago. She also enjoys working with acrylics and oils. "End of Day" is Liz's first exhibition in oils.

In “End of Day”, the paintings focus on the light and shadows visible during late afternoon and early evening. Inspiration for these works came from a child's prayer Liz's late father often recited:

Now the day has ended
Night is drawing nigh
Shadows of the evening
Steal across the sky...

The paintings are worked in the studio from plein air sketches in pen and wash. Liz uses reference photographs but relies a great deal on memory to capture the ambience of the day.

For Liz placing a figure or human element in the landscape is an integral part of the emotive story-telling and to quote Matisse ...

"Nature excites the imagination to representation but one must add to this the spirit of the landscape in order to help its pictorial quality".

Previous exhibitions of Liz’ watercolours were held at Lightning Ridge and Tilba. Liz currently has paintings in Tilba Antiques Gallery and exhibits in various joint exhibitions where she has won several awards over the years.
