“There is no other way of arriving at this music other than by going through everything that led to it” - Eugene Ball.

Australia’s premier large ensemble for improvising musicians, the Australian Art Orchestra (AAO) has undertaken an extraordinary array of projects since 1994 that have featured a range of remarkable ensemble members, guest soloists and composers. For Hard Core on the Fly the emphasis is on spontaneous solo and ensemble improvisation, with members of the AAO performing this cutting edge improvisation with some of the most interesting younger players on the scene. There are no limitations on performance modality except that there is only one hour of rehearsal/discussion at the venue directly before the gig.

Hard Core on the Fly was conceived by trumpeter Scott Tinkler and debuted in 2012 as part of a month long residency at Melbourne’s Bennetts Lane Jazz Club, featuring different combinations of players each week. The 2014 season will again be curated by Scott TInkler, who will select three AAO elders to perform alongside three unique emerging talents at each performance. The series will encompass performances at Bennetts Lane (Melbourne) and around Australia.
