In their second concert as Ensemble in Residence at Queensland Conservatorium, the Lyrebird Trio brings you three contrasting masterpieces of the piano trio repertoire. Dietrich Buxtehude, the German baroque master who reputedly inspired the young J.S. Bach to walk through 200 miles of snow simply to hear him play, opens their concert with his ebullient Trio Sonata, Op.1 in B flat. Next, they explore the fantastical inner world of Robert Schumann with the Piano Trio in F major, Op.80, a work of high drama and aching tenderness. Dmitri Shostakovich’s epic masterpiece, the Piano Trio no.2 in E minor, is one of classical music’s most searing monuments to the horrors of persecution and war; a work as haunting as it is breathtaking.

This concert is part of the 4MBS Festival of Classics.

The Lyrebird Trio was formed in 2013 and is comprised of three distinguished graduates of the Queensland Conservatorium – Glenn Christensen (violin), Simon Cobcroft (cello) and Angela Turner (piano).
