3 million Australians every year experience a mental health problem. This is now a workplace and community problem. The Mental Health First Aid course is designed to help minimise the impact of mental illnesses on workplaces and our communities.
Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, or who is in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional treatment is received or the crisis resolves. The Mental Health First Aid course teaches adults (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to adults who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis.
You will learn the signs and symptoms of these mental health problems, where and how to get help, and what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective. You will take away an evidence based tool to assist adults in these crisis situations:
- suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- panic attacks
- traumatic events
- severe psychotic states
- aggressive behaviours
- severe effects from alcohol and drugs
You will also learn how to help people with the following mental health problems before a crisis develops:
- depression
- anxiety
- psychosis
- substance use problems
This is a 12 hour course, which is delivered as a 2 day training package. A manual is provided to each participant attending the course, along with useful mental health resources.
