The national touring exhibition, 'Moving House', presenting the work of Peter O’Doherty and Susan O’Doherty, features at the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre this winter - Friday 25 July to Sunday 24 August 2014.

'Moving House' is a collaborative project from one Australia’s better known artist couples: Peter and Susan O’Doherty. Peter, an award winning musician and visual artist, is recognised for his muted paintings of architectural elements and everyday suburban scenes while Susan balances her work between abstract painting and mixed media constructions.

This exhibition reflects their respective childhoods living in families that were perpetually on the move. Susan’s constructed wooden and painted assemblages encase found objects depicting the various rooms of the house - kitchen. lounge-room, bathroom etc. To convey the sense of scale through a child’s eye, Peter has painted a series of large canvases, images of suburban houses, their facades, driveways and streetscapes reflecting the distinctive suburban architecture of decades past and present.

Both artists share influences from pop art and culture and a fascination with the de-personalised icons of Australian suburbia. Even though their work practices are very different, there is a common thread to Peter and Susan’s esthetic in terms of feel, composition, colour and subject matter.

Peter and Susan O’Doherty currently live and work together from their home studios in Sydney. When Peter isn’t painting, he makes music with his brother Chris in the band Dog Trumpet.

'Moving House' is a touring exhibition and its the first time Peter and Susan O’Doherty are exhibiting together.
