Program: Dvořák Serenade for Winds, Schubert String Quintet in C

Rated as one of the pinnacles of chamber music, the Quintet was written by Schubert just before he died in 1828. Scored for two violins, one viola and two cellos, Schubert makes the most of the cellos' pliant voices giving them sublime moments. Full of textural variety, singable tunes, brooding, joyful and turbulent moods, it's a demanding piece as rewarding for the performer as the listener. Dvořák demonstrates a variety of styles in each movement of this entertaining, semi-orchestral work - a singing style, a slow waltz, high jinx, lyrical beauty and a burst of joie de vivre.
