The core belief of social entrepreneurs is to encourage the market to embrace the idea that business must work for the good of society. But will the market embrace the idea that ‘shareholder capitalism’ should give way to ‘stakeholder capitalism’? Can a group of social entrepreneurs convince businesses to lead the way in the evolution of capitalism?

Prior to B Lab, Bart Houlahan was President of AND1, a $250m basketball footwear and apparel company. Bart is a Henry Crown Fellow of the Aspen Institute and a recipient of the 2014 Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. Celia Hodson is the CEO of the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE) in Australia and founded of one of the UK’s most successful social enterprise schools, The Eastern Enterprise Hub.

About B Lab (www.bcorporation.com.au)

B Lab is a non-profit organisation founded in 2006 in the USA that serves a global movement to redefine success in business so that all companies compete not only to be the best in the world, but the best for the world. B Lab drives this systemic change through several interrelated initiatives: 1) building a community of Certified B Corporations to make it easier for all of us to tell the difference between “good companies” and good marketing; 2) advancing public policy to accelerate growth of social entrepreneurship and impact investing; 3) providing free, powerful tools for businesses to measure, compare, and improve their social and environmental performance (15,000+ businesses use the B Impact Assessment); and 4) promoting B Analytics, a customizable platform for investors to collect, benchmark, and report impact data.

About B Corporations

B Corporations are certified by the non-profit B Lab to voluntarily meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. Certified B Corporations distinguish themselves in a cluttered marketplace by offering a positive vision of a better way to do business; better for workers, better for communities and better for the environment. The B Corporation community includes over 1, 000 companies from 33 countries and over 60 industries working together toward one unifying goal: harness the power of the private sector for public benefit and redefine success in business.
