This December, Fed Square will transform into a festive playground with Spirit of the Square – a free, family-friendly program of immersive public art, interactive gaming events, musical performances, Christmas crafts and live illustration, culminating in the hugely popular Orphan’s Christmas and Breakfast Hop on Christmas Day.
Melbourne-based design outfit, *SIBLING will create an immersive landscape with Whiteout, an installation of large, snow-white spheres that will pop up throughout The Square. The interactive playground will also feature large-scale installations including a giant draughts board and badminton net.

The Big Screen lights up for Spirit of the Square with free weekly Outdoor Cinema; weekly Fed Jam performances featuring multi-media, music and Big Screen visuals; and Big Screen Gaming with video games by indie designers chosen by Freeplay Independent Games Festival.

Music will fill The Square daily with choirs and vocal groups providing the festive harmonies. Fed Square Live every Thursday evening will offer visitors free acoustic music concerts with some of Melbourne’s best independent artists.
On the first two weekends in December, visitors can join Crafternoons to make their own Christmas baubles. Also during these weekends, Melbourne-based illustration artist Jeffrey Phillips, who has created the Spirit of the Square poster image, will draw visitors in sketches they can take home during special Live Illustration sessions.

In a Spirit of the Square tradition, the Orphans’ Christmas will return for Christmas Day for anyone looking for a new place to take the family or to connect with fellow Christmas exiles. Joining the day’s free events is the Breakfast Hop, an event to connect the people from all walks of life with a free buffet breakfast with lots of activities for kids and adults.
A movie marathon will follow with family films playing on the Big Screen as well as outdoor participatory games led by Melbourne’s Pop Up Playground.
