Riverside Theatres is set to become a children’s activity hub these school holidays with a jam-packed program of incredible live theatre, entertainment and interactive workshops at their annual Spot On Children’s Festival from 30th September until 4th October.

Packed with fantasy and high stakes adventure, Theatre of Image’s brand new musical theatre production Monkey…Journey to the West brings comedy, music and spectacular martial arts from Team 9Lives to Riverside Theatres’ main stage.

Based on the popular Chinese classic story of The Monkey King, and immortalised in Australia by the ABC TV series ‘Monkey Magic’, Monkey…Journey to the West tells the tale of four seemingly unsuitable pilgrims as they overcome 81 tribulations on their journey from China to India to obtain the sacred scriptures and enlightenment. Created by John Bell and Kim Carpenter, this will be a highlight of the theatre going year.

In two fun-filled shows daily, The Magic Chicken sees two chefs mixing up a hilarious blend of physical comedy, live music and puppetry as their lives are interrupted by a mysterious feathered friend. Taking inspiration from Dr. Seuss, the chefs attempt to juggle pots, pans and snarling customers. This is certainly not Masterchef - The Magic Chicken is a messy, madcap, slapstick treat, which is sure to make the whole family laugh.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the fiercest animal in the jungle ¬– Señor Rabbit – is coming to Riverside. Lillian Rodrigues-Pang and band bring this Colombian folktale to life and take children to the jungle to sing, dance, laugh, cry and share in 45 minutes of pure magical fun.

Not to be missed, the very popular Sydney Puppet Theatre returns with Z for Giraffe on Wednesday and Thursday. Based on the true story of a young giraffe captured in Africa and sent as a gift to the King of France, the story follows the young giraffe’s journey by sea and land to Paris.

Other activities that are sure to get children’s imaginations firing include puppet-making workshops, a screening of the film Frozen with fun dress ups and games for the littlies, origami workshops with artist Midori Furze, plus face painting, balloons and a courtyard full of games and play areas.
