A crafty new venue for Australia’s most popular craft & quilt event affords easy access & stunning views
Sydney locals will be treated to captivating views at Australia’s most popular craft event, with the 21st Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair to be held at the city’s stunning new location for exhibitions, the Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island from July 9 – 13, 2014.
Located just ten minutes from Darling Harbour, access to the brand new Sydney Exhibition Centre @ Glebe Island is easy given it is not actually an island and free special event bus and ferry transport options will be available as well as ample venue parking.
Sewing newbies, hipsters, artists, designers, families and textile-lovers will be inspired to thread their needles in new ways and experience craft as never before at the event renowned for its world class displays, non-stop classes and workshops, latest and greatest craft products, and inspirational and knowledgeable special guests. Official ambassador, television personality and passionate crafter, Shelley Craft will join the fold of craft loving enthusiasts at the five day event together with internationally acclaimed experts in showcasing and tutoring their respective crafts, including beach inspired mosaic and shell artist, Meredith Scott who will feel right at home in the waterside location, and the ‘Queen of Tea Cosies’, Loani Prior.
The fair will feature almost 400 quilts in the members’ Sydney Quilt Show exhibitions across 19 categories including traditional and contemporary, art, applique, pictorial, miniature, mixed techniques – anything goes! and even junior quilts. Featured in the 2013 Guild Challenge will be 60 hexagon-style or ‘hexie’ quilts as they’re fondly known, with Guild members demonstrating fascinating hand and machine quiltmaking techniques.
The ‘Living Colour!’ travelling exhibition of 32 vivid textile works will inspire and delight visitors. There will also be a selection of finalists’ entries from the AQC Challenge where artists were invited to create a quilt inspired by the theme ‘Ten’ – resulting in a diverse, personal and inspiring mix of interpretations.
The extraordinary 'Daisy a Day' canvas competition will be in full bloom, with visitors given the opportunity to vote for their favourite of a selection of canvases featuring one or more daisies, with one artwork to be picked as a winner in support of Ovarian Cancer Australia.
The Sydney Craft & Quilt Fair will also showcase a host of inspiring craft ideas, make and take classes and workshops, including unique fashion talks and presentations with a twist from leading vintage fashion expert, Chrissy Keepence of the Lindy Charm School for Girls. Miss Chrissy will present entertaining and timeless advice on how to transform and update any outfit using the ‘Make Do and Mend’ mindset from stylish women of the past.
Fair goers can also get into the Christmas in July spirit and visit an enchanting Christmas area to discover inspiring festive decor displays and attend free Christmas craft classes to learn how to turn this year’s Christmas into a handmade affair.
Craft enthusiasts will also have a special opportunity to stock up and be inspired by specialty retailers selected from all over Australia and their latest supplies including high-tech and coveted sewing and craft gadgets and tools, unique and exquisite trimmings, ribbons, fabrics and buttons and beautifully designed and easy-to-use craft and quilt kits.
