Top Chefs from Melbourne and Sydney will compete in a team challenge for the title of ‘best food city’ in the annual Culinary Charity Challenge at Crown Melbourne on 15 August.

All proceeds will go to the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health (The Florey Institute) the largest brain research group in the Southern Hemisphere. The goal of the event is to provide much needed funds for research into mental diseases such as depression, epilepsy and Alzheimers disease.

Each team member will be put to the test, with just 30 minutes to prepare his dish in front of the live audience. The star-studded lineup extends to the judging panel, which will once again be chaired by acclaimed chef Jacques Reymond, and will consist of top food journalists and critics.

Captain of the Melbourne team is chef and restaurateur, Scott Pickett, from Estelle and Saint Crispin. Having earned Estelle One Chefs Hat and a nomination for ‘Best New Restaurant’ in The Age Good Food Guide 2014, Scott has cemented himself as industry elite.

“The event will be a blockbuster – capturing the famous rivalry between Melbourne and Sydney, and using the hype to support a good cause. Plus, there will be some pretty outstanding food.”

Pickett’s team will consist of John Lawson from No. 8, Stuart McVeigh from Union Food & Wine, and pastry chef Pierre Roelofs from Dessert Evenings at Café Rosamond.

Sydney’s team leader is Guillaume Brahimi, who, having recently closed the doors to Bennelong at the Sydney Opera House, is working towards opening Guillaume, in Paddington. The Sydney chefs are Brent Savage, from Bentley, Darren Robertson of Three Blue Ducks, and James Viles from Biota Dining.

Up to 600 guests at this exclusive event at Palladium at Crown will sample an entrée, main, and dessert dish from each team, and then vote for their favourite city. The dishes from both teams will be created from three base ingredients, spanner crab, beef, and chocolate.

Hosts and MC’s for the evening will be the ever-charismatic Julia Zemiro, performer and host of SBS RokWiz, and Daniel Vaughan. Daniel is owner and restaurateur of Pantry, a Brighton institution, at which he regularly hosts Melbourne chefs for Cooking Shows events.
A standard table for 10 guests at the Florey Culinary Charity Challenge will go for $5,000, with a VIP table costing $6,500.
